Another thing that struck me going to readings is how much more emphasis there is on humor. When I read I don't pause any longer after a funny line than after an extremely well written one. That is not the case when things are read out loud and there is an audible reaction to the funny.

I recently attended a few book readings and I noticed a trend: more women than men, always (some proof below). And I recently read a New Yorker article that proposes one possible, not well studied, driver of this:
"that it is all book-publishing's fault, because the industry is staffed mostly by women, leading to a lady-lit bias in what gets published." - I never actually felt this bias.
