nyc, a reading of Freedom by Jonathan Franzen

(yes, he is there almost visible on the podium)

Another thing that struck me going to readings is how much more emphasis there is on humor. When I read I don't pause any longer after a funny line than after an extremely well written one. That is not the case when things are read out loud and there is an audible reaction to the funny.

brooklyn, bookfair

I recently attended a few book readings and I noticed a trend: more women than men, always (some proof below). And I recently read a New Yorker article that proposes one possible, not well studied, driver of this:

"that it is all book-publishing's fault, because the industry is staffed mostly by women, leading to a lady-lit bias in what gets published." - I never actually felt this bias.

Pictures for Lisa

Leess, in the past few weeks I subjected your friends to my lens (thank you viv, nogs, and kevin) to put together a set of four large prints of your mtl friends in their respective nyc. Below is the current shortlist (below below is the long one). They'll be waiting for you when you are back from your travels.

Happy birthday,

d.
